This article discusses the importance of cultural awareness and diversity consciousness in group therapy settings. The goal is to increase mindfulness towards what is "best practices" in group therapy can often be misapplied without considering the socio-cultural context and identities involved in an interaction within the group process. Group theories, like most constructs, have also been influenced by a color-blind approach where no emphasis is placed on the importance identities and culture has on dynamics in group. The article goes on to discuss how to best set the stage for socio-cultural dialogues to cultivate a culture of curiosity, connectivity, and compassion.
